He studiedmedicine at Trinity College, Cambridge, from 1 2 CONC 725 to 1728, and from1729 to 1732 at the University of Leiden. He graduated MD fromCambridg 2 CONC e in 1732. He was elected FRS in 1732. In 1733 he was sent byhis father to Jamaica, to superv 2 CONC ise the family's sugar estates. InApril 1737 he married Ithamar (c.1720-1738), daughter of th 2 CONC e Hon.Richard Mill, of St Katherine's, Jamaica, and in the same year wasappointed to the Jama 2 CONC ica council. The island's council and assemblycontained strong factions for and against the g 2 CONC overnor; Fuller joinedthe opposition. The couple had one son, who was stillborn. Fuller, unlike his father, had whig sympathies, and supported th 2 CONC e duke ofNewcastle's faction. In parliament he was an important spokesman forJamaica, and spo 2 CONC ke frequently on American affairs. In 1765 thedecrease in the price offered for guns by the B 2 CONC oard of Ordnance, occasioned by the Carron Company's low tender for orders, causedFuller to wi 2 CONC thdraw from the manufacture of guns for the government. His grandfather, PeterBeckford (bap. 1643, d. 1710), went to Jamaic 2 CONC a as a young man, was thefounder of the greatest sugar fortune in the West Indies, and served 2 CONC as lieutenant-governor of the island. The Jamaican Beckfords weredescended from a cadet branc 2 CONC h of a family long established inGloucestershire. One ancestor was Sir William Beckford, wh 2 CONC o was amongthe principal adherents of Richard III. 2 CONT Education in England 2 CONT At the age of fourteen, in 1723, Beckford arrived in England. He wasplaced under the care o 2 CONC f the Revd Robert Freind, then the ableheadmaster of Westminster School, who in later years s 2 CONC poke of Beckfordas one of the best scholars the school ever had. At WestminsterBeckford secur 2 CONC ed the lasting friendship of William Murray, later firstLord Mansfield, the chief justice. Fr 2 CONC om Westminster he went to BalliolCollege, Oxford, in 1721-5. In 1731 he was admitted to the U 2 CONC niversityof Leiden as a medical student and studied under Albinus andBoerhaave. From there h 2 CONC e went to Paris and studied at the Hôpital desInvalides (Alexander, England's Wealthiest Son 2 CONC , 31-5; Smith, 18) . 2 CONT Managing the Jamaican estates 2 CONT The sudden death of his father on 3 April 1735 forced Beckford toabandon his medical studie 2 CONC s and return to Jamaica to help manage thefamily estates. Two years later, on the death of hi 2 CONC s elder brotherPeter who was principal heir of Peter Beckford II, William inheritedthe greate 2 CONC r part of the family's vast estates in Jamaica. Theremainder went to the younger sons-Richard 2 CONC , Nathaniel, Julines, andFrancis. Inventories of Peter Beckford II in 1739 show that he wasso 2 CONC le owner of eleven sugar plantations and part owner of five more, and that he was sole owner o 2 CONC f 1737 slaves and half owner of 577 others(Pares, Merchants and Planters, 25; Jamaica Publi 2 CONC c Record Office, wills series) . That William Beckford in the course of three decadesinherite 2 CONC d and added to his Jamaica sugar properties until theyprobably exceeded the total bequeathe 2 CONC d by his father to his six sonsis shown by inventories taken after his death in 1770. William 2 CONC Beckford's estate in Jamaica consisted of thirteen sugar plantationsin sole ownership, togeth 2 CONC er with numerous smaller establishments suchas provision plantations, cattle pens, and stores 2 CONC , and approximately3000 slaves (Jamaica Public Record Office, inventories series). Landshel 2 CONC d by the Beckford brothers in Jamaica in 1754 totalled 42,075acres, of which William held 22, 2 CONC 021, Richard 9241, Julines 8197, andFrancis 2616 (TNA: PRO, CO 142/31). 2 CONT Jamaican politics 2 CONT Beckford lived in Jamaica during an eventful period in the island'shistory. He saw the end o 2 CONC f a long period of armed conflict between thehighly organized frontier communities of maroons 2 CONC , or runaway slavesand their descendants, and local militia units and British regiments. He wa 2 CONC s present at the centre of the trade conflict between Spain andBritain which erupted into int 2 CONC ernational war from 1739 to 1748.Beckford befriended Cudjoe, the maroon leader, whom he too 2 CONC k sailingand got thoroughly seasick. He also became an enthusiastic member ofhis local militi 2 CONC a unit. In 1737 he was elected to a vacancy in theJamaica house of assembly from his home par 2 CONC ish of Clarendon. There hetook an active part in legislative matters, serving on committees t 2 CONC hatwere concerned with strengthening the island's fortifications, suppressing clandestine trad 2 CONC e, laying duties on wines and spirituousliquors, encouraging white immigrants from Scotland 2 CONC , inspecting thecourts of justice, and preventing frauds and breaches of trust byattorneys o 2 CONC r agents of absentee proprietors. William was not the onlyBeckford to serve in the Assembly 2 CONC ; indeed, he was joined by brothersRichard, Julines, and Nathaniel, by cousin Ballard Beckfor 2 CONC d, and bycousins who had married Beckford women. During the nearly ten yearsthat William Beck 2 CONC ford lived in Jamaica he was primarily occupied withthe management of his numerous properties 2 CONC ; that is, purchasing lands, slaves, equipment, and supplies; lending money to impecuniousplan 2 CONC ters; and engaging in trade and shipping (Feurtado, 8-10; Metcalf,17, 21-2, 64, 78) . 2 CONT Return to Britain and involvement in British politics 2 CONT An item in the Journals of the Assembly of Jamaica for 20 December1744 says, ‘Resolved, Tha 2 CONC t Mr. W. Beckford and Mr. Baldwin, havingdeparted this island without leave, be and stand exp 2 CONC elled the house’(J.A.J., 3.672). Settling in London, where he was described as a WestIndia me 2 CONC rchant, Beckford's trading interests seem to have beenrestricted to supervising the sale of t 2 CONC he produce of his own estatesand the purchase of equipment and supplies to send to Jamaica. H 2 CONC e alsobecame involved in the metropolis in high finance. Richard Paresobserved that ‘the Beck 2 CONC ford family had made its huge fortunes by ajudicious combination of money-lending with planti 2 CONC ng’ (Pares, War andTrade in the West Indies, 514). 2 CONT 2 CONT Within three years of his arrival in England Beckford had enteredparliament. On the interes 2 CONC t of the fourth earl of Shaftesbury, withwhom he was closely associated in politics, he was e 2 CONC lected member ofparliament for Shaftesbury, where he served from 1747 to 1754. From1754 unti 2 CONC l his death in 1770 he served as MP for London. Absenteeplanters from the West Indies were wi 2 CONC dely criticized for theiridentification with slavery, penchant for conspicuous consumption,pu 2 CONC rchase of rotten borough seats in parliament, and manipulation ofthe sugar market. The Beckfo 2 CONC rd brothers were singled out for criticismin a pamphlet of 1754, asserting that ‘No less tha 2 CONC n three brothersfrom one of our Sugar-islands having offered themselves, one forLondon, one f 2 CONC or Bristol, and one for Salisbury; and a fourth brother, according to what has been publishe 2 CONC d in the publick papers, intendedfor a Wiltshire Borough’ (A Short Account of the Interest an 2 CONC d Conductof the Jamaica Planters, 1754, 3). 2 CONT 2 CONT On 25 June 1752, with the support of tory allies in the House ofCommons and the City of Londo 2 CONC n, Beckford took up the freedom of theIronmongers' Company and shortly after was elected alde 2 CONC rman ofBillingsgate ward. Two years later he was elected simultaneouslymember of parliament f 2 CONC or the City of London and the borough ofPetersfield, and chose to sit for London. In 1755 h 2 CONC e was installed inthe office of sheriff of London. He was again elected MP for the Cityof Lon 2 CONC don on 4 April 1761, and before the close of the following yearhe became lord mayor. He serve 2 CONC d another term as lord mayor in 1769 and1770, prior to his death in June of the latter year 2 CONC . Beckford'smayoralty was memorable for its luxurious character. While extremelymoderate in h 2 CONC is own diet, his public banquets were most sumptuous, attended by dukes, marquesses, earls, vi 2 CONC scounts, barons, and membersof the Commons and the livery companies (Beaven, Aldermen of Lond 2 CONC on,1.81, 280, 348). 2 CONT Estates and marriage 2 CONT Compared with the knowledge of his public life, little is known ofBeckford's private life. Ab 2 CONC out 1744 he purchased the 4000 or 5000 acreestate of Fonthill in Wiltshire. Here he built on 2 CONC e of the mostsplendid mansions in England and furnished it on a lavish scale. In1756, at th 2 CONC e age of forty-seven, he married Maria, daughter of theHon. George Hamilton, second son of Ja 2 CONC mes, sixth earl of Abercorn, andwidow of Francis Marsh, another City man. Beckford's only leg 2 CONC itimateson was William Thomas Beckford (1760-1844), the eccentric dilettante, author of the Go 2 CONC thic novel Vathek, and builder of Fonthill Abbey. Hewas the sole heir of his father's estate 2 CONC s in Jamaica and England, which were reputed to yield about £40,000 a year and to be equal tot 2 CONC hose of Robert Clive, the nabob. Alderman Beckford fathered sixillegitimate sons and two daug 2 CONC hters, who were recognized in his will.During his lifetime it was a commonplace for public fi 2 CONC gures to keepmistresses and walk out in public with them. A nephew of someprominence was Will 2 CONC iam Beckford of Somerley (1744-1799), theillegitimate son of Richard Beckford. He was the his 2 CONC torian of Jamaicawho had spent several years as a debtor in the Fleet prison(Alexander, Engla 2 CONC nd's Wealthiest Son, 31-58, 151; HoP, Commons;Sheridan, 1964, 36-58) . 2 CONT Beckford and the West Indian interest 2 CONT Beckford was the leader of an influential group of MPs who wereabsentee proprietors from th 2 CONC e West Indies. They were concerned withresolving political debates in their favour regardin 2 CONC g such matters asmilitary defence of the colonies, trade and shipping, and public andprivat 2 CONC e finance. According to Dame Lillian M. Penson, ‘At the timewhen the greatest successes wer 2 CONC e won for the West India interest, theagents were aided by the assistance of a powerful bod 2 CONC y of men, including Beckford, the intimate associate of the Elder Pitt, and avast number of ot 2 CONC hers whose wealth could command influence in Britishpolitics’ (L. M. Penson, Colonial Agents 2 CONC , 25). 2 CONT 2 CONT It may seem incongruous for a colonial slave owner of great wealth toalso be a radical middle 2 CONC -class reformer of the British government, butthat was the role Beckford played in his devote 2 CONC d support of WilliamPitt, the ‘great commoner’. He used his power in the City of London tofur 2 CONC ther the cause of Pitt's government in national politics. Thesereforms included annual parlia 2 CONC ments, equal representation, extensionof the franchise, invalidation of general warrants, an 2 CONC d championingthe rights of the American colonies. Beckford's speech in the House ofCommons o 2 CONC n 13 November 1761 defined 2 CONT 2 CONT the middling people of England as the manufacturer, the yeoman, themerchant, the country gent 2 CONC leman, they who bear all the heat of theday. … They have a right, Sir, to interfere in the co 2 CONC ndition andconduct of the nation. … [They] are a good natured, well-intentionedand very sensi 2 CONC ble people who know better perhaps than any other nationunder the sun whether they are well g 2 CONC overned or not. (BL, Add. MSS,38, 334, fols. 29ff) 2 CONT 2 CONT The Beckfords were newcomers to the British ruling class, which wasbeginning to include not o 2 CONC nly the old aristocracy and county families, but also those who had acquired wealth and gaine 2 CONC d influence throughcommerce, slave-plantation agriculture, eminence in the professions,or adv 2 CONC enture and speculation. As with the nouveaux riches at othertimes and places, the leaders o 2 CONC f these new families were targets ofcriticism for their bad manners and ostentatious lifestyl 2 CONC es. WilliamBeckford, the rich colonial, occupied a difficult position in Englishsociety becau 2 CONC se of his ugly Jamaican accent, lack of charm, andostentatious display of immense wealth. H 2 CONC e was reputed to have had aviolent temper and a streak of vulgarity. Horace Walpole described 2 CONC Beckford as a ‘noisy good humoured flatterer’, vulgar and absurd, pompous in his expense, an 2 CONC d vainglorious (Walpole, Memoirs of theReign of George II, 1849, 3.177). 2 CONT Beckford, Wilkes, and death 2 CONT The most controversial event in Beckford's political career came in1770, in connection with t 2 CONC he Middlesex parliamentary election. JohnWilkes, the political agitator and reformer and an a 2 CONC lderman of London, had been elected to the House of Commons by a large majority, but wasexpell 2 CONC ed by the government and his opponent returned in his place.Attended by the aldermen and comm 2 CONC on councilmen of London, Beckfordmarched from Guildhall to St James's Palace on 14 March 1770 2 CONC , andpresented to George III a strongly worded address, remonstrance, andpetition complainin 2 CONC g that by supporting the government's action in theMiddlesex election, he was tampering wit 2 CONC h the constitution andpursuing a course similar to that which lost James II his crown. Thekin 2 CONC g's answer to the remonstrance was couched in words of strongreproof. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 23 May of the same year Beckford, accompanied by the aldermen andlivery, presented a secon 2 CONC d remonstrance to the crown from the City ofLondon. When the king again expressed his dissati 2 CONC sfaction with theremonstrance, Beckford, either in an impromptu manner or by reading aprepare 2 CONC d statement, had the temerity to respond to the king's reply.‘We do therefore, with the great 2 CONC est humility and submission’, he said,‘more earnestly supplicate your Majesty that you will n 2 CONC ot dismiss usfrom your presence without expressing a more favourable opinion ofyour faithfu 2 CONC l citizens, and without some comfort, some prospect, atleast, of redress’ (Besant, 23-4). Th 2 CONC e king made no reply. Beckfordwas widely criticized for violating all custom and precedent by 2 CONC delivering a speech which had not been previously submitted to theking. On the other hand, hi 2 CONC s supporters in the City and elsewhereregarded his speech as an honourable and dignified asse 2 CONC rtion of theprivileges of the City and the rights of the people. William Pitt, nowLord Chatha 2 CONC m, declared that he was rejoiced ‘to hear that my lordmayor asserted the City with weight an 2 CONC d spirit’, and that ‘the spiritof old England spoke, that never to be forgotten day’ (Chatham 2 CONC Correspondence, 3.459-60, 462-3). 2 CONT 2 CONT Beckford died on 21 June 1770 while travelling from Fonthill toLondon, four weeks after his a 2 CONC ltercation with the king, from theeffects of a violent fever, caused, as was supposed, by pol 2 CONC iticalexcitement. He was buried on 30 June at Fonthill Gifford. Hissupporters showed their re 2 CONC spect by voting a statue in his memory to beplaced in the Guildhall; it represented him in hi 2 CONC s robes of office, delivering his speech to the king, which was inscribed on the pedestalin le 2 CONC tters of gold. 2 CONT 2 CONT Richard B. In 1792 the Webst 2 CONC ers visited Germany beforetravelling south again via Prague, Vienna, and Venice, reaching Nap 2 CONC lesin October. In 1793 they returned briefly to England but almostimmediately set off again f 2 CONC or Italy. 2 CONT 2 CONT In Naples in 1794 Lady Webster met Henry Richard Fox, third BaronHolland, the nephew of Charl 2 CONC es James Fox; and in May 1795 she refusedto return to England with her husband, who in Augus 2 CONC t changed his nameto Vassall on succeeding to his father-in-law's West Indian estates.Early i 2 CONC n 1796 she conceived a child by Lord Holland and in Maytravelled back to England with him, wh 2 CONC ere their son Charles RichardFox was born on 6 November. On 4 July 1797 Webster divorced hi 2 CONC s wifeand resumed his previous surname, retaining for life her West Indianfortune of £7000 pe 2 CONC r annum; and on 6 July, at Rickmansworth, shemarried Lord Holland. With him she had five furt 2 CONC her children: Stephen(1799-1800); Henry Edward Fox (1802-1859), later fourth and last BaronHo 2 CONC lland; Mary Elizabeth (1806-1891), later Lady Lilford; GeorgianaAnne (1809-1819); and a daugh 2 CONC ter, born and died on 24 June 1812.Following Webster's suicide on 3 June 1800, Holland assume 2 CONC d theadditional name of Vassall to safeguard his children's right to hiswife's West Indian fo 2 CONC rtune. 2 CONT 2 CONT The divorce, which meant that Lady Holland could not be presented atcourt, rendered her posit 2 CONC ion a difficult one and her notoriety wasincreased by the disclosure that, to retain one at l 2 CONC east of herWebster children, she had staged the illness, death, and fake burialof her daughte 2 CONC r Harriet in Italy in 1796. The child was returned toher father in 1799. The story, which wa 2 CONC s widely known, received afresh airing in Lady Charlotte Bury's Diary Illustrative of the Tim 2 CONC esof George the Fourth (1838). It is a testimony to her intelligence andstrength of characte 2 CONC r that despite these disadvantages Lady Hollandwas able to establish so dominant a position i 2 CONC n society. Wishing toenlarge her second husband's circle, ‘as he, thank God, livesconstantl 2 CONC y at home’, she avidly sought out new acquaintances for him.Within a short time Holland House 2 CONC , a Jacobean mansion at Kensingtonpurchased by Holland's grandfather, had become one of the m 2 CONC ostbrilliant centres of political and literary society in all Europe [seealso Holland House s 2 CONC et]. The dazzling roll-call of her guests isrecorded in her Dinner Books, 1799-1845 (BL, Add 2 CONC . MSS 51590-51597).Part of the attraction of the house was the contrasting characters ofthe H 2 CONC ollands themselves. Joseph Jekyll's son characterized them asresembling the opposite poles o 2 CONC f a magnet, he attractive and sherepulsive. She was certainly a demanding hostess. T. B. Maca 2 CONC ulaydescribed her as ‘this violent, weak, imperious woman’. In 1820, at atime of unrest in so 2 CONC uthern Europe, Lady Granville joked that LadyHolland was ‘the only really undisputed monarch 2 CONC y in Europe’ (V.Surtees, ed., A Second Self, 1990, 140). Her regal manner wassatirized by Lad 2 CONC y Caroline Lamb in Glenarvon (1816), where she appearsas the ‘princess of Madagascar’, a nick 2 CONC name which stuck. Most of herfriendships were punctuated by quarrels occasioned by her demand 2 CONC ingnature and forthright opinions. Her intermittent hostilities withThomas Creevey and Charle 2 CONC s Greville are well known, but in 1834 therewas a serious dispute with Lord and Lady Willia 2 CONC m Russell over hercomments on their incompetent conduct of British affairs at Lisbon in1833 2 CONC , and in 1835 she accused Talleyrand of being a tory in disguise. 2 CONT 2 CONT Holland allowed her to exercise an unrestrained despotism over hishousehold and daily life. O 2 CONC n one occasion when Lord Grey insisted shelet her husband have a slice of melon at dinner, h 2 CONC e remarked ‘Ah, LordGrey, I wish you were always here. It is a fine thing to be PrimeMinister 2 CONC .’ In later years, if she thought he was overtiring himself, she would have the servants whee 2 CONC l his chair away from the dinner tablewhile he was in mid-conversation. However, it was he wh 2 CONC o firmlydictated the politics of the house. On her marriage to Holland she hadregarded the wh 2 CONC ig party, centred as it was around a few greatfamilies, as ‘obsolete’ but by late 1830, whe 2 CONC n the whigs came topower, Tavistock said she was acting and thinking ‘as if … in the daysof t 2 CONC he Pelhams & Walpoles’. Nor did Holland permit her to interfere insignificant political decis 2 CONC ions. When in May 1827 she urged him totake office under Canning, she herself admitted ‘he ha 2 CONC d requested herto leave him alone and not ever advise him one way or the other’.Contemporarie 2 CONC s considered that, ambitious as she was for her husband, she had damaged his career. In Januar 2 CONC y 1828 when she demanded of LordJohn Russell why Holland had not been made foreign secretary 2 CONC , heretorted, ‘If you must know, it is because no man will act in aCabinet with a person whos 2 CONC e wife opens all his letters.’ In fact, however, the real reason Holland was not offered a pos 2 CONC t in theGoderich ministry was due solely to George IV's distaste for hispolitics. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lady Holland was widely held to value all things foreign beforeanything British. She accompan 2 CONC ied Holland on his European tours, notably to Spain (1802-5 and 1808-9), from which she was on 2 CONC e of thefirst to introduce the dahlia to England. Her admiration for Bonapartedeveloped early 2 CONC . When British troops were embarked for service againstFrance in 1800, she observed complacen 2 CONC tly ‘they inspire as littlealarm to their enemies as they do confidence in their countrymen’ 2 CONC . In1815, while travelling in Italy, she commissioned a bust of Napoleonfrom Canova. Her desi 2 CONC re to visit him on Elba was frustrated only byhis flight which may, ironically, have been pre 2 CONC cipitated by copies ofThe Courier she had sent him, which reported discussions at Vienna onth 2 CONC e advisability of removing him to the south Atlantic. Despite this, she was to secure permissi 2 CONC on from the British government for herselfand others to send out books and other luxuries t 2 CONC o him on St Helena. His complaints about his custodian there, the hapless Sir Hudson Lowe,sh 2 CONC e and her husband accepted at face value. On his death in 1821,Bonaparte left her the gold sn 2 CONC uff box presented to him by Pius VI atTolentino in 1797; this she bequeathed to the British M 2 CONC useum. 2 CONT 2 CONT Lady Holland's independence of mind also exhibited itself in a disdainfor religion. This wa 2 CONC s strengthened by the presence in the Hollandhousehold from 1802 of John Allen (1771-1843), w 2 CONC ho was known as LadyHolland's atheist or ‘anti-chaplain’, though she discouraged asimpolite a 2 CONC ny too overt expression of such views at the dinner table. She was, however, extremely superst 2 CONC itious. Macaulay observed that shewas ‘afraid of ghosts, but not of God’. She also feared dea 2 CONC th. Thismay partly account for her chronic hypochondria. At one point she wasbeing treated b 2 CONC y seven physicians. Dr Chambers's forthrightobservation in response to her complaints of hear 2 CONC t and stomach pain in1833 that as one grew older the heart naturally enlarged, she regardeda 2 CONC s her ‘death warrant’; his services were summarily dispensed with. However idle her fears ma 2 CONC y have been, they did serve to render herlife miserable. 2 CONT 2 CONT After the death of Lord Holland on 22 October 1840, Lady Holland couldno longer bring hersel 2 CONC f to live at Holland House but continued toentertain as large a circle as ever, mostly at 3 2 CONC 3 South Street, whichher mother had left her. In November 1843 she moved to 9 GreatStanhope S 2 CONC treet, which she rented from Lord Palmerston. John Allenremained a member of her household un 2 CONC til his death on 8 April 1843.Her servants (of whom the best known were the Doggett brothers, 2 CONC ‘Harold’ her page and ‘Edgar’ the librarian) were devoted to her buther children she succeede 2 CONC d in alienating. Her will was controversial, leaving to Lord John Russell for his life the inc 2 CONC ome from the family'sLambeth estate. Her explanation, that this reflected Holland'sintentio 2 CONC n to leave him the reversion of the Ampthill estate, wasdisputed. As resented, but far more j 2 CONC ustified, was her decision toleave Russell those family papers and materials for a life of Ch 2 CONC arlesJames Fox on which both her husband and Allen had worked. Russellpublished these as Th 2 CONC e Memorials and Correspondence of Charles JamesFox, (4 vols., 1853-7). Taken ill on the 9th 2 CONC , Lady Holland died on 17November 1845 at Great Stanhope Street of heart disease, and wasburi 2 CONC ed at Millbrook, near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, on 25 November. Her husband's kinsman, Lord I 2 CONC lchester, edited a selection of herletters to the fourth Baron Holland, Elizabeth, Lady Holla 2 CONC nd to herSon, 1821-1845 (1946), and extracts from her diaries, The Journal ofElizabeth, Lad 2 CONC y Holland (1908) and The Spanish Journal of Elizabeth,Lady Holland (1910). 2 CONT 2 CONT C.
